Documentary has become an increasingly more visible part of the media landscape. It dominates television programming, it appears online, and it even appears in movie theaters. The current infusions of the personal and the political, along with the events in the Middle East and the upcoming U.S. elections, encourage new trends in and raise new questions about the subject.This area seeks to explore documentary in all its forms. All related topics and theoretical orientations are welcome. Possible topics include the following

  • issues of representation

  • documentary and politics

  • documentary as social activism

  • documentary production and distribution

  • documentary and ethnography / visual anthropology

  • documentary and its uses in education / pedagogy

  • documentary and media and cultural institutions

  • documentary photography and radio

  • truth and ethics

  • home video

  • contemporary directors

  • reality television
