The Visual Culture area of the PCA/ACA Conference is a vibrant contributor to the national conference and encourages presentations in traditional, non-traditional, and emerging areas of study from academics, non-academics, students and scholars at all stages of their careers.


We are currently seeking proposals for panel sessions and individual presentations that engage with issues, ideas, and practices related to visual culture, including but not limited to:

  • Traditions and conventions associated with visual culture
  • Studio art practices and theories
  • Image-focused theory
  • Interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity, and intermedia as they inform visual culture
  • Architecture
  • Art history and theory (all periods)
  • Photography
  • Journalism and photojournalism (television and print media)
  • Film and cinematic culture
  • Public art (graffiti, murals, public commissions and installations)
  • New media and computer-based issues in visual culture
  • Advertising
  • Graphic design
  • Design history and theory
  • Visual culture and everydayness
  • Comparative studies and multiculturalism in visual culture(s)
  • Visual culture and the subversion of grand narratives
  • Modes of seeing, “reading” and experiencing the visual
  • Verbal, visual, and performative relationships
  • Iconographic studies
  • Aesthetics


Beginning on August 1, 2019, interested individuals should submit an abstract of no more than 250 words (including presentation title) for their proposed panel or paper and provide all requested contact details via the PCA/ACA online submission portal, which can be found at: http://conference.pcaaca.org. The deadline for submission of all abstracts is November 24, 2019

February 1, 2021————Presenter Late Registration Ends at 11:59 pm: Non-registrants Dropped from Program

February 2, 2021———–Non-Presenters Registration Continues

March 31-April 3, 2021—-National Conference in Boston

All presenters must be current, paid members of the PCA and fully registered for the conference.

Refund requests must be submitted in writing. Full or partial refunds will be processed according to the following schedule:
Requested by Jan. 1: 100% refund
Requested by Jan. 15: 75% refund
Requested by Jan. 25: 50% refund
Requested by Feb. 1: 25% refund
After Feb. 1: 0% refund

Membership fees are not refundable.
