Call for Proposals

"AI Regulation: A Carnival of Ideas"

In September 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsome vetoed an AI safety bill passed by state legislators by a wide margin. In his veto message, he wrote: “I take seriously the responsibility to regulate this industry” even though by vetoing the bill, he was shirking that responsibility. In a surprisingly opposite move in July 2025, U.S. Senators voted 99 to 1 to remove “the AI moratorium” provision of the  “Big Beautiful Bill” that would have prevented state legislatures from regulating AI products. In a polarized and partisan environment, all but one of the senators believed that state’s need the ability to regulate AI.

Ed tech companies are hyping AI with the wide-eyed enthusiasm of a medicine show barker (with scant reference to caveats or long-term implications) as they increase the torrential flow of AI products. The Communication and Digital Culture Area is inviting you to a conversation about how human interests can benefit from sensible regulations on AI deployment and adoption. Proposals for our area might explore AI regulatory options, suggest specific avenues of protective policy, and/or imagine new solutions for instituting ethical AI guardrails.

On the last day of presentations, we will conclude our “Carnival of Ideas” with a moderated roundtable that leverages suggestions from each session and encourages action-oriented networking and community building among our members.

Topics for presentations and panels for this CFP might include:
Teaching with/about AI, Classroom & Institutional AI Policies, Governmental Regulation of AI, AI Surveillance and Data Mining, Digital Rhetoric in AI, Evaluating Ed Tech, AI Resistance, Classroom Experiences, Shared Governance Communities, Intellectual Property, and more.

Additionally, we welcome relevant proposals on Communication and Digital Culture outside the discussion of AI.
